La Spezia is the main cruise gateway to the Cinque Terre, five pastel fishing villages connected by cliffside trails and a coastal train — Vernazza and Manarola are the most photographed. Guests short on time can instead visit nearby Portovenere, a smaller, less crowded version of the Cinque Terre right on the gulf. Boat excursions along the coastline are a popular alternative to the hiking trails.
